DIY Food Edition: Better to Cook than to Buy

Something that processed food in grocery stores has in common? It's all packed in plastic and has ingredients that we don't even know how to pronounce. The solution? Do it yourself! In the following article, you will find 3 great recipes for products that you would usually buy in the grocery store - even though you don't even have to! The recipes are not only super easy but also way healthier!

For Pancakes Lovers

Pancakes are great: they are an excuse to start the day with something sweet and you can make them in every version you want. No matter if you like it super healthy, with some chocolate or even a little bit salty! Also: there is no need to buy the pancake mix from the grocery store. The following recipe is not just my favorite because it tastes so good, but also because it is so easy to make! Here we go:

Banana-Oat Pancakes with Berries and Peanut Butter

(fyi: if you just have flour at home instead of bananas, oats or both, that works too)

100g oats

2 eggs

2 medium ripe bananas

1 teaspoon baking powder (no need, but makes it more "fluffy")

125ml Almond Milk (or any plant-based milk you like/have)

1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

Mix it all together until you have a smooth dough. Start making one pancake after another in a pan with coconut oil. DONE! Top it with peanut butter and berries or whatever your heart desires!

Self-made Granola

The following recipe is honestly too simple to be true. The only thing you really need is oats and honey/maple syrup (to make it sticky). You don't need the exact amount of anything either. Muesli is basically a great way to get rid of some leftovers of nuts, berries, or oats that you don't know what to combine them with!

Dark Chocolate Drops

I mix everything except for the chocolate drops together and put it on an oven tray which is lined with baking paper. Preheat the oven to 350 F, toss it 2-3 times and take it out as soon as it is golden and crispy.

Make your own almond milk instead of buying it in a plastic package!

This recipe is a great alternative for all the people who are (like me) obsessed with almond milk! Unfortunately, it definitely takes more time than just going to the next grocery store BUT it tastes so much better and as soon as you know how it works, it won't take too much time.

You need:

1 Cup of Almonds

Honey (I like dates too)

1 pinch of salt

5 Cups Water

To begin, soak the almonds overnight. The next morning, put it together with the water and the salt into a blender until it is smooth. Then, use a thin clean towel (or a nut milk bag if you have one) and use it to lift the almond substance. Squeeze it into some kind of cup or glass. You can use the pulp for baked goods later but try to use it as soon as possible! The milk tastes best if you drink it within the next 1-2 days but it should last up to 5 days.
